Stephen Harry Alexander Fedun
June 9, 1951 - April 16, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Stephen Harry Alexander Fedun, who passed away peacefully on April 16, 2025, at St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care in Winnipeg, Manitoba, at the age of 73.
Stephen was born on June 9, 1951, in Winnipeg, where he grew up in the heart of the North End on Magnus Avenue. He was the son of Alec Fedun and Elizabeth Fedun (née Malofie) deceased, who owned Fedun’s Hardware on Selkirk Avenue — a staple in the community and a place that helped shape Stephen’s lifelong connection to craftsmanship.
He attended Lord Nelson, Immaculate Heart of Mary School, and graduated from Tec Voc High School in 1970 with a certificate in Building Construction. Stephen went on to share his skills with others, teaching carpentry at Tec Voc’s night school, and later found his calling as a talented custom cabinet maker. He owned his own business and was known for creating beautiful, hand-crafted cabinets. He spent many years installing cabinets alongside his nephew Mark Stropko — somehow managing not to get punched in the face in all that time (as Mark would joke).
Before discovering his true calling in carpentry, Stephen worked with the CP Railroad and explored a variety of jobs—always driven by a strong work ethic and an endless curiosity. He had a lifelong love of music, attending countless concerts and building an impressive record collection that reflected his deep appreciation for sound. That same passion extended to his love of wheels. Stephen had a special admiration for cars and enjoyed collecting model cars throughout his life.
In retirement, he found renewed purpose and happiness working at Adesa (Openlane), where he was once again surrounded by the things he loved most. Driving a wide range of unique vehicles brought him true joy, and the camaraderie he found there became deeply meaningful. His Adesa family held a special place in his heart, and he often spoke with hope about returning to the driver’s seat.
Stephen also found deep joy in the outdoors, especially through his lifelong connection to the 141 Fishing Club, where his father, Alec, was a founding member in 1953. The Club was more than just a place—it was a second home filled with memories, traditions, and friendships that meant the world to him. Stephen cherished the time spent there and held a deep affection for all its members, who felt like extended family. The 141 remained a special and grounding place in his life, offering peace, laughter, and connection through the years.
He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Stephen is survived by his wife, Rachelle Fedun; son Michael Fedun (Sarah Fedun); daughter Stacie Rasmussen (Randy Sonnichsen); and cherished grandson Sebastian. He is also remembered by his sisters Sandra Hoffman (Richard, predeceased 2021) and Connie Boychuck (Edward), and his brothers Michael Fedun and Peter Fedun (Michel Forest). He was predeceased by his sister Tessa Hanesiak (née Fedun).
Stephen was a loving stepfather to Michelle McCrady (Blake McCrady) and Monique Rivington, and proud step-grandfather to Nathan, Maggie, Sarah, and Jake. He will be deeply missed by extended family: Jeannine and Harry, Real and Paulette, Jean and Lucy, Rob (Aline predeceased 2022), and Dominque — as well as the many nieces and nephews who brought him so much joy.
Stephen had a sharp sense of humor, a quick wit, and never hesitated to share his opinion — whether you asked for it or not. He was a true craftsman who poured care into every custom cabinet he built. But more than that, he built a life full of laughter, stories, and unforgettable memories. He treasured the visits and conversations with close friends and family, especially in his final weeks.
A private celebration of Stephen’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Cancer Care Manitoba.
