Heather Johnston
September 18, 1949 - March 4, 2026
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother on Wednesday, March 4th, in the early morning hours at home, surrounded by the love of her children, Sheryl, Shelley, and Bill.
Mom was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on September 18, 1949. She lived a life filled with creativity, love for her family, and a strong independent spirit that touched everyone who knew her. She was predeceased by the love of her life, our father Donald Cameron Johnston; mother Joan and father William, her birth father James Wardell, whom she never had the chance to meet but who loved her, as well as her brothers Duke and Richard West and Jim Wardell.
She leaves behind her loving children William, Shelley, and Sheryl, who will forever cherish the memories, laughter, and guidance she shared throughout their lives. She also leaves behind her grandchildren Brittany (Scott), Alex (Steph), Erick (Nikki), Hannah, and James, and her great-grandchildren Lindsay, Liam, and Jake, all of whom she loved very much.
She is also survived by many siblings who were an important part of her life: Sylvia (Gerry), Wendy, Robin (Valerie), Billy-Jo, and Kelly. In recent years, she was grateful to connect with additional siblings she had not previously known about: Dennis (Kathleen), Geri, Janet, Debbie, and Cathy. These new family connections brought her happiness and a sense of belonging that meant a great deal to her.
Mom had a creative soul and found great joy in expressing herself through painting and music, often spending time at her keyboard creating melodies simply for the pleasure of it. She also had a well-known love of shopping, something she enjoyed both for the fun of it and for finding little treasures for those she loved.
She faced her battle with cancer with courage and resilience, surrounded by the love and support of her family. Through it all, she remained herself—strong, spirited, and deeply devoted to the people who meant the most to her.
Rest easy Mom. Your work here is done and your love lives on in us. We promise to look out for each other.
William, Sheryl and Shelley.
